Autumn Term: 2021/22
Welcome back to a new term with YBLS, and if you're just joining us we're so glad to have you as a member of our society!
This term we have in-person lessons twice a week on campus and booking is not necessary. You do not need to wear a mask. However, in line with government and university recommendations, we do advice that you wear one on entering the building, but you do not need to do this whilst dancing.
Dancing with a partner is now also allowed! However, you do not need to do this if you feel uncomfortable, and we also ask that you respect other members wishes and be considerate of their concerns.
We are very excited to be able to return to some in-person activities this term! You MUST book your place in lessons and rehearsals via Wix in order to attend, and the usual Covid-19 precautions apply (see below). We will also be continuing with online lessons to support the in-person lessons and also so that those unable to attend our in-person lessons still have the opportunity to dance.
Online lessons, taught by Joel, will take place over Zoom on Tuesday evenings and will run the same as in previous terms with booking via Google forms in the weekly email.
In-person lessons, also taught by Joel, will take place on Wednesday afternoons on the tennis courts next to the Sports Centre on West Campus.
In-person rehearsals, lead by our choreographers, will take place on Sundays again on the tennis courts.
For full information, including timings and prices, please see the weekly email and our social media posts.
Our online lessons are continuing this term. We’d thoroughly recommend them to everyone! It’s a great way to have fun and stay active during lockdown 3.0, and it’s so nice to see all of our lovely dancers.
All online lessons will be taught by Joel, live over zoom!
Lessons will include both lead and follow steps and are £2 for each 45 minute lesson.
The google form to sign-up for lessons and the bank details for payment will be sent via email.
We are currently waiting to find out what the government and university guidelines will be when term restarts before resuming lessons or releasing a timetable for the second term. In first term we started with in-person socially distanced lessons before successfully transitioning to online lessons in November during the second national lockdown. Whether in-person or online, we will offer weekly lessons in ballroom and latin and social activities during university term times. To stay updated and receive the latest news, please sign up to our mailing list and follow our social media. In the mean time, keep dancing!
Good news! We've managed to set up our online lessons and we can continue to dance throughout lockdown.
All of our online lessons will be taught by our professional teacher, Joel, live over Zoom. There will be one beginner and one novice/open level lesson every Tuesday and Thursday for the remainder of term. Lessons will include both lead and follow steps, and are priced at £2 for each 45 minute lesson (or £4 for both).
Don't worry if you don't have much space or you're on a carpeted floor, it's definitely still possible to join in, and we are adjusting our timetable to accommodate these factors. This is a perfect opportunity to get your housemates involved and have a boogie in the kitchen!
Please see the most recent email for the google form to sign up for lessons and bank details for payment. Details for the zoom call cannot be sent until you have signed up and payment has been received.
Thank you for your patience whilst we have been organising this, it is all very new to us! As always, don't hesitate to get in touch with any questions.
Dear YBLS members past, present and future, please read the following information regarding the next academic year:
Covid and lockdown has affected everyone and we know you probably have questions ahead of the new year starting. Our committee has been working together over the Summer and communicating regularly with YUSU to develop a plan for delivering our usual activities in a way that is enjoyable but, of course, is safe and compliant with the government and university guidelines. With that in mind - we will be offering socially distanced lessons and lots of social activities that are all within the guidelines. We want to give everyone the opportunity to learn to dance and have fun in a positive environment whilst waiting to put it into proper practice when it is possible to do so.
We are thrilled to still be able to run our dance lessons this term whilst adhering to government and YUSU guidelines. However, there are a few things that have changed so that lessons can still go ahead. Please take the time to read through these precautions before attending lessons to ensure there is no confusion on the day.
If you (or anyone in your household) are displaying any symptoms or have been asked to isolate, please do not come to lessons.
All of our lessons will be run maintaining social distancing between all members, so please maintain 2 metres distance from everyone before, during and after lessons (unless you attend with a member of your household).
Due to social distancing restrictions, there will be a capacity limit on how many dancers we can have at each lesson; therefore, you will need to book your place in lessons in order to attend. Please do not turn up to lessons if you have not filled out the online booking form (see more below).
Everyone will need to sanitise their hands upon arrival.
We will need to take everyone's contact details as required by the YUSU track and trace system.
Lessons can be paid for either by contactless card payments or in exact change (see more below).
Current YUSU guidelines require masks to be worn in enclosed indoor spaces on campus. You are not required to wear masks while dancing.
BOOKING YOUR PLACE IN LESSONS:
Due to restrictions on the number of people we can have in the room for lessons to allow for social distancing, we have limited availability for our lessons. Therefore, you will need to book your place in lessons in order to attend.
We understand that everyone's plans can change, but please cancel lesson bookings at least 2 hours before the lesson time to make sure that no one misses out on some fabulous teaching!
Please note: You are able to attend both lessons on a particular day (e.g. Beginner and Novice on Tuesday) but you will need to book your place in both separately.
For the first Tuesday lesson (6th October) this will be done via a google form (please contact us for the links) but for future lessons we will move to using the Wix app for bookings, whereby lessons can be booked up to seven days in advance. More information on using the Wix app will be posted soon!
CHANGES TO TIMETABLE:
Please note that we now have lessons taught by Joel on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. You can view the full timetable here.
Normally we would have an Intermediate/Advanced lesson once a week for more experienced dancers. However, due to the restrictions preventing us from dancing with a partner we have decided these lessons would not be practical at this time. Instead we've decided to replace this time we a technique lesson which can hopefully still be enjoyable and very useful for dancers at novice level and above. We're certain that Joel will still work us hard in those sessions!
As the situation changes over the year we will review the timetable to ensure we are offering the best lessons for our members whilst meeting the government and university guidelines.
Although normally everyone swaps who they dance with throughout the lesson, at the moment, we're not allowed to dance with partners unless you're in a household bubble, so it doesn't matter if you don't have a partner - for now we will be dancing separately to put it into proper practice with a partner later on. However, it is a great excuse to bring your housemates along with you!
Please can we ask that everyone brings either a card for contactless payments or the correct change for lessons; we are unable to provide change for anyone at the moment. Annual membership is £7 which gets you your first lesson free and after that it's only £3 per lesson (1 hour) or £5 if you attend two lessons (2 hours) on the same day.
To access new opportunities and gain more recognition for Ballroom and Latin at York, we decided this year to become a sport. This means we finally get to represent York in black and gold! However, it does mean you will have to purchase the Gold Tier AU Fee sports membership (£10) as well as our society membership (£7) to join our society. These can be both purchased via the YUSU website.
If you have any other questions please see our FAQ page or don't hesitate to contact us via email or social media.
